Data Breach at Australian Health Insurer Impacts 4 Million Customers, Could Cost $35M

Australian health insurer Medibank on Wednesday confirmed that the personal and health information of all customers has been compromised in a recent data breach. Identified on October 12 and consistent with the precursor of a ransomware attack - albeit no ransomware has been deployed on Medibank's systems - the incident has resulted in a threat actor exfiltrating roughly 200 gigabytes of data. Ransomware down this year - but there's a catch

The number of ransomware attacks worldwide dropped 31 percent year-over-year during the first nine of months 2022, at least as far as SonicWall has observed. But don't get too excited. While that may sound like great news, there's a catch. According to SonicWall CEO Robert VanKirk, the decline follows a record-setting spike in 2021. Grand jury indicts Ukrainian for role in vast Raccoon Infostealer cybercrime operation

The Justice Department on Tuesday unsealed charges against a Ukrainian national for his role in the Raccoon Infostealer malware-as-a-service operation, which U.S. law enforcement officials blamed for infecting millions of computers around the world to steal personal data. Raccoon Infostealer sold its malware on the for $75 per week or $200 per month, but reportedly claimed it shut down in March after one of its developers died in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. PayPal Introduces More Secure Payments with Passkeys

Today, PayPal announced it is adding passkeys as an easy and secure log in method for PayPal accounts. Passkeys are a new industry standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium that replace passwords with cryptographic key pairs, offering customers a simple and secure way to log in to PayPal based on technology that is resistant to phishing and designed so that there is no shared passkey data between platforms.
